This guide walks you through the installation process for an EV Home Charger. There are just four steps involved - all of which are quick and easy to complete.
The first step is to think about what EV charger you might like. You can view and compare the best EV chargers on our website. This is a range of quality units that we have tested and can recommend for UK installations. Most chargers fall within the £600 - £1200 price range.
No. If you want help choosing, you can ask an engineer during your survey. The engineer will help you identify the most suitable charger for your installation and needs, or get back to you later with further details.
The next step is to arrange the site survey. This enables you to get an accurate, fixed price quote. Booking online is easy and takes about 60 seconds. Simply enter a date, time and contact details - you'll get an email confirmation afterwards. You can also get in touch to schedule via email, live chat or phone.
Next, your Selfcharge engineer will arrive on time for your survey as arranged. If the unforeseen happens, we’ll contact you immediately. At the survey, our engineer will complete a quick evaluation and also assess your OZEV grant eligibility. Surveys are informal with nothing to prepare on your part. This will take approx. 30 minutes. We’ll just need access to view the charger position and cable route, with a quick look at your electrical supply and consumer unit too.
We'll always let you know the name and details of a visiting engineer. You'll be able to contact them at any time if you so wish. Our engineers are experienced and trained in EV charger installations. They're also qualified to the very latest regulations. You can read more about our employee integrity here.
Following your survey, we email you a quote with details of the proposed work and lead times. It's always fixed, meaning the price you see is the price you'll pay!
When you're ready, let us know, and we'll send you an invoice. To begin your order, you'll need to pay a percentage deposit approximately equal to the cost of your charger and equipment. You can pay by bank transfer or card online at any time. You'll get confirmation and an invoice statement sent to your inbox.
Selfcharge will order your equipment as soon as you make the initial payment. Some electric vehicle chargers can take a few weeks to arrive whereas others are delivered the next day.
After you've progressed your order, we'll schedule a date for installation that is convenient to you. A notice period of 5 days or more is typical, but we can install sooner if necessary.
Selfcharge completes as much of your application and OZEV paperwork as possible. You will simply get a finalised document to sign electronically.
Some customers may need to gather some ownership evidence. For example, if you drive a company car you will need to email us an employer's letter. Companies usually have templates in place for this. You can view OZEV's requirements here.
When your order arrives, we check the delivery is complete before we leave! We may run it on our test bench to pre-commission and update to the latest device software and look for any issues before it gets installed.
We'll let you know if you need to clear access space etc. On the day, your power will need to be shut off for a short period (at your convenience).
Your engineer will arrive on time and get to work installing your devices. You can carry on with your day as normal while we operate. A straightforward installation will take about half a day, some may take longer.
Almost always, it will be the same engineer who conducted your site survey. They'll be fully aware of your requirements and exactly how to complete your installation.
Your engineer will give you a demo on how to use your new EV charger. You will get a handover pack with user manuals, help sheets and device information. Afterwards, we'll email your DNO notification and your BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate. You should keep these for your records. For peace of mind, you’ll also receive a Selfcharge Quality Assurance sheet. This is completed by your engineer and verifies the installation quality and compliance.
The last action is to make the final payment on your invoice. This will be the balance payable as detailed on your invoice.
You'll never be asked to pay anything the spot. Instead, we will email your invoice as before to pay at your convenience within our payment terms.
